The largest city in New England also happens to be the capitol of Massachusetts, Boston and it is a US travel destination full of rich culture and steep in history. In this city it doesn’t matter what your background is in history, every traveler quickly realizes that Boston played a very important role in the American Revolution, so why not highlight this as you visit. When you visit all the historic American Revolution scattered throughout the city it is hard not to realize the sacrifices made America the independence it enjoys today.
A great start back in time is a place that it all was destroyed, Boston Harbor. This was the site of the Boston Tea Party where many crates of the valuable tea cargo were tossed overboard in 1773. This act is viewed historically as the main trigger of the American Revolution. What immediately followed was the shutting down of the port and the passing of the Boston Port Act which would keep the port closed until the owners of the cargo was compensated.
You can now visit the Boston Tea Party Museum and find a full scale replica of one of the ships. Take a ferry ride to one of the many islands around Boston Harbor which many are part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. No longer a commercial port, you can spend a great leisurely day near the ocean and soak in the history.
When you have finished your visit at the Boston Harbor, see more historical site with a trip on the Freedom Trail. This trail is marked by a path of red bricks and runs right through downtown Boston. Dotted along this path is sixteen historical sites, all of which had a significant impact in the Revolution. You’ll see the Bunker Hill Monument, Constitution Museum, the Old North Church where the lanterns where hung to warn if the British were coming by land or by sea and many other great historical sites.
One of the other great sites a long the trail is Paul Revere House, which obviously was the home
of the Paul Revere. Paul Revere no only famous for those words “The British are coming”, but also a messenger in the battles of Lexington and Concord and served as an officer during the Revolutionary War. His home is one of the most visited monuments a long the Freedom Trail.
Boston is a beautiful city but also compact in the historical center. You could easily visit all the historical sites in a single weekend and not need any extra time off. Boston would make a great US travel destination on anytime you needed a little get away time.
